If you’ve been on BookTok for any length of time, you’ve undoubtedly heard of the Throne of Glass series by Sarah J. Maas and the seemingly many opinions on how to read this series.

Also, Hulu bought the rights to this series to make it into a TV show, so I am very much hoping that if this gets more traction we will one day see this TV series!

This is the first series that was written by Sarah J Maas, she later went on to write A Court of Thorns and Roses, which I am obsessed with. If you haven’t read that series yet, I highly recommend checking that out as well as the Crescent City series. If you want to find out how to read all of Sarah J. Maas’ Books in Order, make sure to give that post a look as well. Plus, it features the full list of books she’s written and the year they came out.

Of course, if you are on BookTok, by now you’ve definitely heard of Fourth Wing by Rebecca Yarros. I have also made a complete guide for Fourth Wing that I am sure you will enjoy if you are enjoying the Throne of Glass series!

This is such a good book series. If you enjoy fantasy novels with an emotional impact or you just want to read about a teenage assassin for hire turn would-be royal assassin, you will undoubtedly love this series. Lucky for you, the entire series is already published!

Summary of Throne of Glass Without Spoilers

Celaena Sardothien is an 18-year-old assassin who, for a chance for freedom from the prison camp at the salt mines of Endovier, becomes Crown Prince Dorian Havilliard’s champion in a competition to find a new royal assassin. If she wins, she will have to serve as the deadliest assassin for the royals, but after four years she will get her freedom in return. During this competition, her fellow assassin contestants start turning up dead. Celaena Sardothien is on the hunt to figure out who the killer could be before they get to her too.

That’s not the only problem our maybe royal assassin faces, if she can beat out all her fellow assassins and win, she then has to work for an absolutely brutal king she despises.

Sarah J. Maas’s Throne of Glass Reading Order

Now, there is a lot of controversy surrounding the proper reading order of Throne of Glass, so I am going to give you two options chronological and then the way that most people recommend reading it.

Order of Publication

  1. The Assassin’s Blade (Amazon)
  2. Throne of Glass (Amazon)
  3. Crown of Midnight (Amazon)
  4. Heir of Fire (Amazon)
  5. Queen of Shadows (Amazon)
  6. Empire of Storms (Amazon)
  7. Tower of Dawn (Amazon)
  8. Kingdom of Ash (Amazon)

Reader’s Recommended Order

The one thing about this series is that everyone seems to read this series a different way. So, I am attempting to give you the most popular way to read this series which includes the tandem reading of Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn.

The Assassin’s Blade includes all the prequel prequel novellas that are before the events of Throne of Glass, but most people don’t suggest reading it at the beginning. For getting the most emotional engagement with the story, this is the recommended reading order.

  1. Throne of Glass (Amazon)
  2. Crown of Midnight (Amazon)
  3. The Assassin’s Blade (Amazon)
  4. Heir of Fire (Amazon)
  5. Queen of Shadows (Amazon)
  6. Empire of Storms* (Amazon)
  7. Tower of Dawn* (Amazon)
  8. Kingdom of Ash (Amazon)

*Read these together! They happen at the same time. Just act like it’s one book. Don’t stress. Honestly, if you don’t read them together, you are not going to want to read Tower of Dawn before Kingdom of Ash and it’s really important that you do.

There’s also a box set of this series that still has the old covers (which I personally like a lot better).

How to Tandem Read Empire of Storms and Tower of Dawn

You’re not going to want to go back. Just read them together. You’ll love it and I am going to tell you just how to do it.
