Book Review: Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Honestly, the moment I finished Cinder I knew I needed to check out the rest of the series from my library. I was immediately obsessed it has been absolutely amazing. If you haven’t checked out my review of Cinder by Marissa Meyer, please click here. But, anyway, back on track. I just had to read Scarlet and I think that this retelling was done incredibly well.

Summary of Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Cinder, the cyborg mechanic, returns in the second thrilling installment of Marissa Meyer’s bestselling Lunar Chronicles. She’s trying to break out of prison–even though if she succeeds, she’ll be the Commonwealth’s most wanted fugitive.

Halfway around the world, Scarlet Benoit’s grandmother is missing. It turns out there are many things Scarlet doesn’t know about her grandmother or the grave danger she has lived in her whole life. When Scarlet encounters Wolf, a street fighter who may have information as to her grandmother’s whereabouts, she is loath to trust this stranger, but is inexplicably drawn to him, and he to her. As Scarlet and Wolf unravel one mystery, they encounter another when they meet Cinder. Now, all of them must stay one step ahead of the vicious Lunar Queen Levana, who will do anything for the handsome Prince Kai to become her husband, her king, her prisoner.

My Review of Scarlet by Marissa Meyer

Honestly, I think this story did a fantastic job of playing in the universe. It didn’t feel like a forced fairy tale, which so many of them do. It basically adapted the little red riding hood story to work within the world of the Lunar Chronicles and it did it incredibly well.

Honestly, the idea of all these fairy tales existing in one world is something I love already. It’s like the MCU, every time something new comes out you know you’re returning to the same world you love with characters that are familiar to you.

I also loved that we continued to return to Cinder’s journey and kept tabs on all our favorite characters. I am incredibly curious to see how this continues as we build our army of fairy tale characters in the coming books. I have honestly already requested the next book from my library and I can’t wait to read that one.
