Book Review: We Survivors

Disclaimer: The author sent me this book in exchange for my honest review. All opinions are my own.

You may have seen this on my indie author post. Well, after adding the link to that post, the L. J. Thomas reached out to me through my review request page to see if I wanted to review it. I don’t know why but I always love those ‘after the end of the world’ novels so I excitedly agreed.

Honestly, I loved this book! I really can’t wait to tell you all about it, but I binged it between my Storm and Fury reading for the Barely Book Club.

Summary

After disease and nuclear warfare decimate the world population, 17-year-old Nadia is sure she’s the last person left on Earth. She buries her before-the-end memories and focuses on survival. Then one night, she hears a voice on her radio and everything changes.

Nadia finds comfort in her new-found companions, but they also discover an unsettling thread tying them together: their shared birthdays. As they begin to unravel the mysteries surrounding their survival, they soon realize it was no accident, and that they could be in far more danger than they ever imagined…

We Survivors: A Story from After the End by L. J. Thomas

My Review

I feel like everything about this book shocked me. Obviously, I will not spoil anything for you, but there were multiple moments I was shook. I think what was interesting to me about this book was that it was a book about people more than anything else. When you read books like this that are about the end of the world, they tend to be about politics and society more so than people, in my opinion. It was refreshing to see people survive and connect instead of oppressive governments and the like.

In terms of the writing, I think the story flowed very well and the pacing was very good. In general, it was very well written and I think it’s one of those books you could get caught up in very easily.

If you are someone who likes to read about the end of the world and you’re looking for a new take on it, I think you’ll like this. I really enjoyed it.

A bit of a warning, though, these characters do go through some mental health struggles. So, if you have triggers associated with self-harm, suicide, or PTSD please take care of yourself and just know that these are topics that are discussed.
