Over the last year or so, I have become a big fan of the dark romance genre, so I wanted to make a list of all the books I think you should read and I’ll be adding to this post every time I find something that’s a must read.

If you are unfamiliar with the dark romance genre, there are some things you should know before getting into it. First, there is always a large list of trigger warnings that you should check out prior to picking up one of these books and two, dark romance tends to be where horror and romance meet. So, if you’re already not a fan of horror or thriller you may not want to try this out and check out spicy BookTok books instead.

Haunting Adeline by H. D. Carlton

At this point, I think it would be illegal to talk about dark romance and not talk about Haunting Adeline. If you have been combing through dark romance books, you’ve heard about Zade Meadows, a man who spends all his time hunting down anyone involved in human trafficking who also has a part-time job stalking Adeline, a writer who lives in a very haunted house.

I would also highly recommend checking out the rest of H. D. Carlton’s books. I have been working my way through them and I haven’t been disappointed.

The Manipulator

I can manipulate the emotions of anyone who lets me.
I will make you hurt, make you cry, make you laugh and sigh.
But my words don’t affect him. Especially not when I plead for him to leave.
He’s always there, watching and waiting.
And I can never look away.
Not when I want him to come closer.

The Shadow

I didn’t mean to fall in love.
But now that I have, I can’t stay away.
I’m mesmerized by her smile, by her eyes, and the way she moves.
The way she undresses…
I’ll keep watching and waiting. Until I can make her mine.
And once she is, I’ll never let her go.
Not even when she begs me to.

Zodiac Academy by Caroline Peckham and Susanne Valenti

This is a dark romance series that had me bawling my eyes out on numerous occasions. This is a bully romance, so make sure you keep that in mind. This series is also very long, so check out my full post here on the Zodiac Academy books in order.

This series has a variety of complex relationships and you will never know whose side you are on. There are so many twists and turns that it’s sure to keep you on your toes.

I’m a Gemini. Impulsive. Curious. Headstrong. A twin. Heir to a throne I know nothing about. And it turns out, I’m Fae.

But of course there’s a catch – all I have to do to claim my birth right is prove that I’m the most powerful supernatural in the whole of Solaria. And sure, technically that’s true as I’m the daughter of the Savage King. But the bit they didn’t put in the brochure was that every single Fae in this Kingdom would claim my throne if they could.

The school they’ve sent me to is both dangerous as sh*t and one helluva party. Vampires bite weaker students in the corridors, the Werewolf pack has orgies in the Wailing Wood at every full moon and don’t even get me started on the dark and twisted ways the Sirens use their powers on people’s emotions, or how my sinfully tempting Cardinal Magic teacher hosts detentions that leave people needing therapy.

Classes are totally interesting if you manage to live through them. And that Gemini star sign I mentioned? It now determines my elemental magic and affects my destiny, so learning astrology is essential if I’m going to beat down my classmates – which is actively encouraged by the way.

My biggest problem is the drool worthy Dragon shifter who has his eyes on my throne. He and his three psycho friends are determined to make my time here hell.

All I’ve got to do is survive. But fate might have other ideas.

Dammit, why couldn’t I have gotten a letter to Hogwarts?

This is the perfect dark contemporary romance for anyone who loves a retelling. As the name implies, this is a Peter Pan retelling, but it’s a very loose retelling. Personally, I almost enjoy a reimaging more because it feels like there are so many more possibilities.

He wants revenge, but he wants her more…

James has always had one agenda: destroy his enemy, Peter Michaels. When Peter’s twenty-year-old daughter Wendy shows up in James’s bar, he sees his way in. Seduce the girl and use her for his revenge. It’s the perfect plan, until things in James’s organization begin to crumble. Suddenly, he has to find the traitor in his midst, and his plan for revenge gets murkier as James starts to see Wendy as more than just a pawn in his game.

Wendy has been cloistered away most of her life by her wealthy cold father, but a spontaneous night out with friends turns into an intense and addictive love affair with the dark and brooding James. As much as she knows James is dangerous, Wendy can’t seem to shake her desire for him. But as their relationship grows more heated and she learns more about the world he moves in, she finds herself unsure if she’s falling for the man known as James or the monster known as Hook.

Butcher & Blackbird by Brynne Weaver

This is very much giving rom-com meets dark romance and I love it. I think it was such a fun story and I am anxiously awaiting the next one. I feel like the cover is so cute I almost wasn’t sure what I was getting into when I started this book.

To me, this feels like a beach read for dark contemporary romance lovers. Does that make sense? Like, technically it’s a very light read with a lot of dark themes.

When a chance encounter sparks an unlikely bond between rival murderers Sloane and Rowan, they find something elusive—the friendship of two like-minded, pitch-black souls who just happen to enjoy killing other serial killers.

From small-town West Virginia to upscale California, and from downtown Boston to rural Texas, the two hunters collide in an annual game of blood and suffering, one that pits them against the most dangerous monsters in the country.

But as their friendship develops into something more, the restless ghosts left in their wake are only a few steps behind, ready to claim more than just their newfound love.

Can Rowan and Sloane dig themselves out of a game of graves?
Or have they finally met their match?

Her Soul to Take by Harley LaRoux

This dark contemporary romance features so many things you’ll love. First of all, I will never stop reading monster romance, so of course I was won over when they said demon. Then, you really keep pulling me in with talks of the occult, gods, and hauntings. It’s really my jam.

This is a series in which all the books are taking place at the same time from three different couples. So, be prepared to kind of choose your favorite… Just kidding, unless you really want to.

Leon I earned my reputation among magicians for a reason: one wrong move and you’re dead. Killer, they called me, and killing is what I’m best at. Except her. The one I was supposed to take, the one I should have killed – I didn’t. The cult that once controlled me wants her, and I’m not about to lose my new toy to them.

Rae I’ve always believed in the supernatural. Hunting for ghosts is my passion, but summoning a demon was never part of the plan. Monsters are roaming the woods, and something ancient – something evil – is waking up and calling my name. I don’t know who I can trust, or how deep this darkness goes. All I know is my one shot at survival is the demon stalking me, and he doesn’t just want my body – he wants my soul.
