With how popular Haunting Adeline by H.D. Carlton has become on BookTok, I think it was only fitting to list how to read all of H.D. Carlton’s books in order.

These books are incredibly dark, so please check out the content warnings on each to make sure you’re prepared for the type of content you will encounter. These may be the darkest love stories you have ever read, which is why so many people love them.

Funny enough, the Cat and Mouse Duet is one of those series I decided to try out because of the bad book reviews. Have you ever seen those? They’re videos on TikTok where essentially they show bad reviews the book received but it’s basically just that people can’t handle dark romance books. Honestly, it’s one of my favorite things authors do.

Oh, did I mention that the creepy stalker in Haunting Adeline just happens to be super hot? Also, he might end people for committing crimes against women.

This story also has a very unique way of formulating itself. Not only is it dual perspectives, but there’s this aspect of journal entries that I am very into.

While I have spent a lot of time hyping up the Cat and Mouse duet, I highly recommend reading even more of H. D. Carlton’s books for the full experience.

It’s honestly best to ready H. D. Carlton’s books in publication order, especially with a lot of your favorite character in the Cat and Mouse duet popping into other books.

Satan’s Affair

This is a novella that is recommended to be read ahead of Haunting Adeline but it isn’t necessary. I enjoyed it even though I read it after the fact, but if you do decide to read it after the Cat and Mouse Duet, there will be some spoilers.

Summary

This book focuses on Sibby, who hides in the traveling fair, Satan’s Affair. Sibby’s only goal is to cleanse the world of evil and her henchmen are ready to help her do just that.

What is Haunting Adeline About?

First, there are a variety of content warnings for this story, as well as the second book in the series, so make sure you’re comfortable with them before getting into it. This is a very dark romance, so if there’s anything off-limits to you, this may not be the story for you. I will include the summary of the first book but not the second so that you don’t have any spoilers if you are interested in reading this series for yourself.

Additionally, you can choose whether you want to read the prequel about Sibby before or after this duology. I accidentally read it after, but it kind of depends on what your interest is. If you enjoy reverse harem, I would read Satan’s Affair first prior to reading Haunting Adeline since that’s the way it is technically intended.

I also highly recommend listening to the audiobook of this, as it is voiced by Teddy Hamilton and Michelle Sparks. I won’t lie, I would listen to Teddy Hamilton ready a shopping list and I am not even ashamed about it.

Summary

In this book, we meet Adeline Reilly, a successful writer who lives in a stunning gothic manor in the woods. One day, she goes to a book signing where she is spotted by a man who spends his time ridding the scum of the world from the Earth. He wants to ruin her and make her his, and what better way to show someone the worst of yourself than turning into a frightening stalker through mysterious break-ins.

Shallow River

This book is actually a complete standalone, but it’s personally not my favorite of the books she has put out. I did enjoy it quite a bit, but of course it will be hard to top the Cat and Mouse duet.

Summary

River McAllister fled Shallow Hill, leaving behind her innocence and some sanity. Now, she’s starting over with Ryan Fitzgerald, who is handsome, rich, and protective.

However, the rose-tinted glasses cannot cover up all the red flags anymore and when their relationship darkens, Ryan’s brother, Mako, sees the danger, knowing Ryan’s true cruelty. But River has never been a damsel in distress and is ready to protect herself.

Does It Hurt?

This is another dark standalone, which is why readers love H. D. Carlton. Also, if you have a fear of sharks and or the ocean, to the point where you don’t want to read about them, this might not be your cup of tea. This book has a pretty suspenseful plot and I was stressed most of the reading. It was a great time though.

Summary

Sawyer has been on the run for so long, she forgets what it’s like not to be. She’s scraped by stealing men’s identities and Enzo is meant to be her next victim. However, something about Enzo is different and she can’t help but see him again.

Enzo lures Sawyer onto his boat to make her pay for her crimes, but a bad storm leaves them shipwrecked in a lighthouse with the sketchiest old man either of them has ever met.

Where’s Molly

This book is a spinoff of the Cat and Mouse duet, but you can absolutely read this as a standalone.

Summary

In this book, we’re finally getting a peek into Molly’s back story and how her relationship with Cage develops. This one is not nearly as dark as the Cat and Mouse duet while still featuring the spicy content you know and love. Also, it’s honestly pretty short, so if you’re looking for a good in-between read this is a great option.

Phantom

So, this one is a prequel to the Cat and Mouse Duet, but you should definitely read it after. This focuses entirely on Gigi and Ronaldo’s story, so get ready for the persistent stalker trope you know and love.

Summary

It’s November 12, 1944, and this gothic manor is already haunted. When Gigi was married, she promised she would love her husband forever. There’s only one problem, she lied. She never intended to fall for her stalker and involve herself in the darker die of life, and yet…

These books have taken the book community by storm and I think for good reason. If you started with the Cat and Mouse book duology, now is a great time to go back and read the rest of the books by this amazing author. There’s a reason H. D. Carlton is a best-selling author, let me tell you and I am very much looking forward to her future books.
